The Fender Yngwie Malmsteen Stratocaster was designed in the newly formed Fender Custom Shop in 1987-1988. It became the very first Fender Signature Series guitar being introduced along with the Eric Clapton Stratocaster in 1988. The Strat above is the original configuration although I have changed the pickups and bridge saddles (I do that sort of thing often). The original pickups were DiMarzio HS-3 noiseless in the bridge and neck positions, and a Fender Vintage Reissue 57/62 in the middle position. Fender made a few minor updates to the guitar configuration over time, but the first major revision was done in 1998. Two of the pickups were changed, the tone pots were changed, the body got a new profile, the neck also got a new profile, the headstock was changed, and scalloping was made deeper. Basically it went from being a guitar based on a 1958 Strat to one based on a 1968 Strat. Then again in 2008 there were also major design revisions made, mostly involving the neck profile and the scalloping. The one above I have since sold, but for a good amount of time it was my number 1 Strat. I do still own a 1999 model. But this 1988 YJM Strat was my first scalloped neck Strat. The first of many…
